Breathability

Sisalwool is insulation with a big impact (by having a small impact). A sustainable alternative to synthetic insulations, Sisalwool is made from just that - sisal and wool. Specifically, renewable sisal fibres, surplus wool, and recycled materials that would otherwise head straight to landfills. By transforming waste into warmth, we are promoting a circular economy, reducing environmental impact while improving building performance.

What is Breathability?

In its simplest terms, breathability refers to a material’s ability to let moisture pass through. This is vital, particularly in retrofit projects, as it prevents moisture from becoming trapped inside the building’s structure.

Why does this matter? Well, while modern buildings are built to be airtight, historic structures were designed with breathable materials like lime, clay, and natural fibres that allow moisture to evaporate naturally. When non-breathable materials are introduced in renovations, this delicate balance is disrupted, often causing structural damage and health issues such as damp, mould, and poor indoor air quality.

Sisalwool: Your Breathability-Friendly Insulation

Both sisal and wool are naturally vapour-permeable, allowing water vapour to pass through the insulation rather than becoming trapped inside walls, roofs, or floors. This helps maintain a dry, healthy building fabric. Sisalwool is ideal for traditional solid wall buildings and breathable retrofits.

Our blend of sisal and wool is no happy accident. These materials have been chosen thanks to the natural properties of both exceptional insulators. Wool absorbs and releases moisture without losing its insulating power, holding up to 33% of its weight in moisture vapour without ever feeling wet. Sisal fibres have a capillary structure that efficiently absorbs and releases humidity while drying quickly, helping to balance indoor moisture levels and prevent dampness.

What Does This Mean for Your Home or Project?

Sisalwool works in harmony with traditional breathable materials, maintaining stable indoor temperatures without trapping heat or moisture. This means lower energy costs, higher building efficiency and a comfortable environment year round.

Once Sisalwool goes in, you don’t have to think about it again. The strong structure and long lasting materials used in our blend reduces maintenance costs and preserve the building’s integrity longer term.
