The project

A much-loved granite period home, owned by the same family for over 30 years, was ready for an upgrade. The aim was to improve energy efficiency and sustainability without compromising the historic character of the property.

As part of a wider retrofit, the homeowner replaced an old gas boiler with an air source heat pump (ASHP) and turned to MW Clubb Architectural Design to guide the insulation strategy. The design team carried out a detailed assessment to ensure all interventions met the strict requirements for listed buildings.

Goals

  • Improve energy efficiency
  • Support the performance of new low-carbon heating systems
  • Use sustainable, breathable materials
  • Protect the original stonework
  • Maintain the character of a historic granite home

Why Sisalwool?

For MW Clubb, the choice of insulation had to align with their commitment to sustainable, responsible design. Sisalwool fit the brief perfectly. Made from natural wool and recycled sisal fibres, it’s not only environmentally conscious but also breathable, essential when working with solid granite walls. Sisalwool improves thermal comfort throughout the home while allowing moisture to move safely through the building fabric, avoiding issues like damp or condensation.

On top of its technical benefits, the material is gentle to handle, easy to install, and helps reduce reliance on fossil fuels when used alongside systems like ASHPs.

Benefits

  • Complements low-carbon heating systems like ASHPs
  • Excellent thermal performance
  • Breathable and vapour open, ideal for granite buildings
  • Non-toxic, easy to install and handle
  • Sustainable and low-carbon

Installation

Forbes Solutions Ltd carried out the installation with care and precision. Sisalwool was friction-fitted between studs in internal wall frames, installed between joists under the floor, and laid in the loft to maximise thermal performance across the home.

Throughout the process, the original structure and appearance of the granite house were respected. The insulation works discreetly behind the scenes, helping the house stay warmer in winter and cooler in summer, all while reducing energy use.
