A Natural Solution For Protecting And Stabilising A Working Hive
When a rat chewed its way into a poly hive, it exposed a wider issue for beekeeper Iain - not just pest vulnerability, but the challenge of maintaining a stable, insulated environment for his bees.
Having struggled to find a suitable insulation material for beehives, Iain turned to Sisalwool to create a more robust, breathable, and temperature-stable home.
The Challenge
Beehives require a delicate balance. They need to retain heat - particularly through colder months - while also managing moisture and ventilation to keep the colony healthy.
Standard hive materials don’t always provide that balance, and in this case, the added problem of pest damage meant the structure itself needed rethinking.
The Solution
Using Sisalwool slabs and loft roll, Iain rebuilt and upgraded the hive:
- A new hive floor was constructed
- A mouse, rat, and wasp-proof entrance was installed
- A 60-degree internal slope guides bees into the brood box
- 50mm of Sisalwool insulation was installed in the base roof (cut from 100mm slabs)
- A breather membrane lining was added to prevent bees contacting the fibres
This approach combined physical protection with high-performance natural insulation, tailored to the specific needs of the hive.
The Result
The upgraded hive now provides a warm, dry, and stable environment for the colony.
Sisalwool’s ability to retain heat while allowing moisture to escape has created noticeably improved internal conditions….supporting the bees through winter and reducing environmental stress.
Reflection
“I’ve always struggled to find an insulation that really works for beehives. Sisalwool is the first one that’s ticked all the boxes.”
- Iain, Beekeeper
“When I opened the hive, you could physically feel the heat being released. The bees generate their own warmth and Sisalwool holds it in.”
- Iain, Beekeeper
“It’s not a typical application, but it shows the versatility of natural insulation. You’re creating a stable, breathable environment, which is exactly what both buildings and beehives need.”
- Jamie Williamson, Sisalwool
