Sisalwool has been recognised as a CPD Provider by the Institute of Historic Building Conservation (IHBC), underscoring our commitment to sensitive, technically robust retrofit of older and historic buildings.
This milestone follows the strong reception to our recent CPD for The Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland (RIAS), where 100% of attendees rated the session “very good” or “excellent” and over three quarters said they were very likely or extremely likely to specify or recommend Sisalwool as a result.
What IHBC recognition means for heritage buildings?
For Sisalwool, IHBC recognition is about more than accreditation; it affirms our core belief that improving comfort and energy efficiency should never come at the expense of historic fabric. It acknowledges that our CPD content supports the professional development of conservation practitioners by grounding modern performance goals in a clear understanding of how traditional buildings actually work.
Our sessions help conservation professionals, architects and specifiers navigate the challenges of retrofit in older buildings, with a focus on breathable, nature-based insulation that supports long-term building health.
We explore how to manage moisture safely, respect original materials and detailing, and create build-ups that work with - not against - the building’s existing fabric. This aligns closely with IHBC’s emphasis on informed, conservation-led decision-making and with RIAS’s commitment to high-quality, practical learning for practitioners.
CPD that supports conservation-led retrofit
Our recognised CPD offering covers the principles and practice of using Sisalwool in traditional and historic buildings, from fundamentals of breathability and hygrothermal performance through to detailing and installation on-site. The recent RIAS session demonstrated a clear appetite for this kind of content with responses highlighting the growing demand for practical guidance that bridges conservation values with modern performance expectations.
Our aim is to equip professionals with the confidence to specify solutions that are low carbon and low risk, while extending the life and usefulness of the buildings in their care.
Respecting the life of older buildings
Older buildings help tell the story of their communities, and we’re committed to ensuring they can continue to do so for generations to come. Sisalwool’s natural, vapour-open insulation works brilliantly in traditional construction, allowing buildings to breathe while delivering meaningful improvements in thermal comfort and energy performance.
Through our IHBC-recognised CPD sessions we will continue to champion retrofit that protects character, fabric and occupant wellbeing. As Nic McCormick, CEO at Sisalwool, comments:
“Sisalwool is building, people and planet friendly – purposely designed to be the world’s friendliest insulation. Being recognised within the conservation CPD landscape is a powerful endorsement of our belief that the best retrofit starts by respecting the life of the building. Our goal is to support professionals who care deeply about heritage, giving them practical, nature-based tools to help older buildings breathe, perform and thrive long into the future.”
