Transforming a 200-Year-Old Cottage with Sisalwool Insulation

Transforming a 200-Year-Old Cottage with Sisalwool Insulation

Project Overview:

Location: Aberdeen, Scotland
Property Type: 200-year-old cottage

Project Goals:

Address damp issues, improve insulation, and enhance energy efficiency while preserving the historic integrity of the cottage.

Challenges:

The cottage had been experiencing significant damp issues, a common problem in older
properties. The existing insulation was outdated and ineffective, contributing to poor thermal performance and discomfort for the residents.

Solution:

The project involved a multi-step approach to address the damp issues and upgrade the
insulation using sustainable materials. All internal work was carried out by the homeowner.

Lime Rendering:
The external walls of the cottage were rendered with lime. Lime
rendering was chosen for its breathability and compatibility with older
buildings, helping to manage moisture and prevent damp issues.

Removal of Old Insulation:
The old insulation was carefully removed, and the entire area was thoroughly
cleaned to ensure a fresh start for the new insulation installation

Installation of Pro Clima Dasatop Membrane:
A Pro Clima Dasatop breathable membrane was installed. This membrane
allows moisture to escape while preventing dampness from entering, creating
a healthier living environment.

Insulation with Sisalwool:
Joists and Rafters: The cottage had 150mm joists.

Materials Used:
▪ Sisalwool 100: Installed between the rafters.
▪ Sisalwool Loftroll: Added as an additional layer between the rafters.
▪ Sisalwool 100: Applied across the rafters.

The use of Sisalwool Natural Fibre Insulation, made from recycled wool and sisal, provided excellent thermal properties while maintaining breathability, crucial for the old structure.

Outcome:

The comprehensive insulation upgrade transformed the 200-year-old cottage into a
comfortable and energy-efficient home. The combination of lime rendering and
Sisalwool insulation addressed the damp issues effectively and improved the overall
thermal performance of the property.

Benefits:

Improved Comfort: The cottage is now warmer and more comfortable, with
significantly reduced damp issues.

Energy Efficiency: The upgraded insulation has enhanced the energy efficiency of
the cottage, leading to potential savings on heating costs.

Sustainability: Using Sisalwool, a sustainable and environmentally friendly
Insulation material aligns with modern eco-conscious renovation practices.

Heritage Preservation: The project maintained the historic integrity of the cottage
while integrating modern insulation solutions.

This case study showcases how modern insulation techniques and sustainable materials can effectively transform and preserve historic properties, providing a comfortable living
environment while addressing common issues such as dampness
